The Lyric Ave show, produced by CO-LAB PRODUCTIONS, LLC, is the brainchild of Craig Watson and Dontron Goode, best friends and poets born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. These multi-talented friends had the desire to share their creative gifts, build a platform for fellow artists, and give the community an alternative to ordinary night life and entertainment.
CO-LAB Productions has a vision to unite cultures, and speak life through creative artistic expression and a mission to create an avenue for artists, entrepreneurs and innovators to showcase their talents, while connecting creative writing services, youth and young adult programs, and cutting-edge entertainment that inspires positive global change.
The first Lyric Ave show took place on May 2003 at the Underground Nightclub in Shockoe Bottom. The primary focus was to deliver entertainment with a socially relevant message, encompassing a variety of art forms, such as poetry, music, comedy and dance. Often referred to as a dynamic fusion of the shows, “Def Poetry”, “In Living Color”, “Saturday Night Live” and “The Apollo”, Lyric Ave has grown from two friends with a dream to a current cast of over 20 performing artists. Over the years, the show and its cast has been featured in many media outlets, showcased at various premier venues and has become a staple at providing entertainment services in the community.
At the heart of CO-LAB’s mission is community outreach and providing edutainment through its Creative Services Program. The program offers:
- Artist development workshops
- Educational poetry and theater programs
- Personal and corporate creative writing services
- Community and church events and programs
Craig Watson currently serves as the Executive Producer. His ultimate vision for the company is for The Lyric Ave Show to be seen by millions on national television, as well as presenting the live show at theaters across the country.
